January 9: International Choreographers
Day: -- Choreographers are the masterminds behind all the
beautiful dance choreographies and routines we see - the creative
geniuses behind designing, planning, and arranging different
movements together. Many prominent choreographers have emerged and
started revolutionary dance companies that are still running
today. Choreographers paved the way for many to come after them,
they bring art to life, and International Choreographers Day is a
day of celebration and appreciation for them. While it is hard to
pinpoint the exact time of the origination of dance,
archaeological evidence suggests it has been around for centuries.
We know that before there were any languages, there was oral and
performative communication. Evidence shows that dance has been
used for cultural, religious, and communicative purposes since the
beginning of time. Social, celebratory, and ritual dances are also
some of the most important factors in the development of early
human civilizations. Since dance cannot leave historical evidence,
secondary sources inform us of its existence and spread. Some of
the earliest evidence of dance comes from temple carvings in
ancient India and Egypt. Ritual dances were a part of ancient
Greece and even performed before the opening of the Olympic Games
(kind of like present-day opening ceremony performances). Dance
was also done for entertainment purposes. There is even evidence
of a Greek celebration that entailed drinking and dancing for
weeks straight. Dance made its way across the globe for different
purposes. With time, there was an explosion of new dance forms and
music, and it became structured. As people explored more, the
rules and characteristics of different dance forms became evident.
The interaction of dance, music, and performance became more
intertwined, and artists started showcasing their choreographic
vision. In the 1900s, the words 'choreography' and 'choreographer'
came into use, and the world of choreography took a new form.
International Choreography Day began to be celebrated every year
on January 9 to celebrate these artists. On Sale @ 15% Off

January 9: National Word Nerd Day: -- A
day that encourages enthusing about our favorite words and the
importance of language in our culture. Whether you always know
what to say, or you often end up with your foot in your mouth,
words are essential to our success and progress. National Word
Nerd Day gives us the chance to learn some new words, use some old
ones, and maybe even borrow them from someone else! We've got some
wordy ways to spend your day and verbose views on how to celebrate
this National Word Nerd Day! Humans have communicated since we
first walked on Earth, though our early language was nowhere near
as complex as the systems of words we use today. Once, our basic
vocabulary range was no different from that of great apes, but as
we advanced, so did our language. With developments in our
lifestyle, we needed to be able to name things, communicate ideas,
and express ourselves to aid our advancement. Words and language
became increasingly important, yet it took many centuries until
they were considered important enough to document. During the
medieval period, the written word was considered a luxury, with
only the rich or the anointed able to read and write in a
sophisticated way. As such, the majority was only able to enjoy
words through oral storytelling. Shakespeare and other great
wordsmiths used their love of words to delight audiences in the
theatres, even inventing words for use in their work. But by the
mid-18th century, reading and writing were more widely taught and
accessible to a greater range of people. As a result, it became
necessary to produce a comprehensive list of words and their
meanings in the English language, a task embarked upon by British
Dr. Samuel Johnson, who was paid 1.5K GN (approximately 325K USD
in today's money) for its completion. After seven years of toil,
his dictionary was published in 1755 and is still widely regarded
as one of the most influential texts of the English language.
Today, we celebrate National Word Nerd Day to mark the importance
of words in our history and civilization, giving us an excuse to
geek out on our favorites! On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

January 9: Static Electricity Day: -- A
day dedicated to the funny (and sometimes annoying) electric
charge phenomenon and learning why and how it happens. Humans are
no strangers to static electricity since we can see, feel, and
hear its effects in most cases. Static electricity is around us in
more forms than just static shock and is quite useful and
harmless. Static electricity refers to an increased electric
charge present on the surface of an object. This charge either
remains on said surface, travels to the ground, gets discharged,
or transfers onto another object. When you rub two objects
together, they acquire equal and opposite charges developing an
attraction between them. Simply put, opposites attract and the
electric force is basically an attraction between opposite
charges. Greek philosopher, Thales of Miletus, was the first to
mention static electricity in his accounts. While cleaning his
amber he found that smaller dust particles would start sticking to
it when he rubbed it. This was followed up 300 years later when
Theophrastus rubbed different stones together to observe this
"power of attraction." None of them, however, went on to
research this phenomenon in depth. Around 2,000 years later, once
the term 'electricity' had been coined, there was room for a
deeper understanding and research of the concept. German scientist
Otto von Guericke started researching static electricity, French
physicist Charles-Augustin de Coulomb researched a fixed quantity
of static electricity, and American scientist Benjamin Franklin
associated static electricity with storms. Another key player was
scientist Michael Faraday, who proved that electricity from a
magnet, voltaic electricity produced by a battery, and static
electricity are the same. Once there was more understanding of the
concept, static electricity started being used in magic tricks,
innovations, etc. Today we are surrounded by static electricity in
our daily lives. It is often mistaken to be merely a static shock,
but it is so much more. Static electricity was discovered by
Thales of Miletus, finding it a mysterious, attractive force when
rubbing his amber clean. In the 17th Century, research into static
electricity was reignited when Otto von Guericke conducted
in-depth research into the phenomenono when he created the
friction generator, now known as an electrostatic generator or
electrostatic machine, an electrical generator that produces
static electricity at high voltage and low continuous current. By
the 18th century, scientists made further discoveries and
developed a basic understanding of the topic, and people began to
use it. By the 19th century. Michael Faraday discovered that the
study of static electricity was identical to the study of
electricity. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

January 9: National WONK Day: -- As you
might imagine, it celebrates Washington, D.C.s political
enthusiasts, those committed to their beliefs. A 'WONK' is someone
genuinely interested in a specific field, and the term is
especially used to refer to those deeply involved in politics.
Truly dutiful individuals, working for the greater good. In 2019,
iHeartRadio launched Washington's WONK-FM to honor those residing
in the capital. According to the company, "We think WONKS
deserve a day of recognition and a radio station to match! You
work hard, and you deserve to play hard." The radio has been
a fixture in human lives for many years now. Its name refers to a
technology for "signaling and communicating radio waves,"
the basis of wireless transmissions. These waves were first
identified in 1886 by German physicist Heinrich Hertz, and his
discovery eventually led to the invention of the first practical
radio transmitters and receivers by Guglielmo Marconi, between
1895 and 1896. Radios, however, only became popular around 1900.
Near the turn of the 20th century, Reginald Fessenden started
working on positioning audio radio transmissions as a successor to
earlier spark-gap transmissions. By the fall of 1900, Fessenden
was able to transmit speech over a distance of a mile, making it
the first known successful audio transmission using radio signals.
Unfortunately, the sound was too distorted to be commercially
viable. Later on, on Christmas Eve 1906, Fessenden was able to
orchestrate the first radio program broadcast, playing 'O Holy
Night' on his violin and reciting verses from the "Bible."
This was the earliest instance of amplitude modulation or A.M.
radio. Radio programs have since been used for a variety of
purposes, from entertainment to news. In 2019, iHeartRadio
launched Washington's WONK-FM in honor of WONKs residing in the
capital of the United States. Academically speaking, a WONK is a
"person who takes an enthusiastic or excessive interest in
the specialized details of a particular subject or field,
especially political policy." To this, iHeartRadio states:
"We think WONKS deserve a day of recognition and a radio
station to match! You work hard, and you deserve to play hard."

hours. Rarely do they know what their days have in store for them.
Often law enforcement are the only paid emergency resource a
community has. More often they work in coordination with other
local, state, and federal organizations to make communities safer.
On National Law Enforcement Day, we have an opportunity to thank
them for their service and offer a token of respect. There are
several ways to show your support. Send a note of thanks to your
local, county or state police agency. Wear blue, turn your social
media channels blue or shine a blue porch light to show your
support. Share your support using

January 9, 1431: Religion: The History Of
Religion: Abrahamic Religions: Christianity: Roman Catholicism:
The Latin Church (Latin: Ecclesia Latina): Joan Of Arc ((French:
Jeanne D'Arc): The Trial Of Joan Of Arc: -- The trial of Joan of
Arc begins in Rouen, France on accusations of heresy, which
included blaspheming by wearing men's clothes, acting upon visions
that were demonic, and refusing to submit her words and deeds to
the judgment of the church. She had been captured by Burgundian
troops on May 23 when a company of volunteers organized by Joan
tried to relieve Compiegne, which had been besieged by the
Burgundians-French allies of the English. After trying
unsuccessfully to escape, she was handed to the English in
November, and she was put on trial by Bishop Pierre Cauchon, a
strong partisan of English interests in France during the latter
years of the Hundred Years' War who presided as judge at her trial
. She was declared guilty, and died when she was burned at the
stake, aged about nineteen, in Rouen, Normandy, then under English
rule, executed by burning at the stake by an English-dominated
tribunal on the charge, of all things, of cross-dressing. A
monument in Rouen is inscribed with the words of Andre Malraux: "O
Jeanne, without sepulchre, without portrait, you know that the
tomb of heroes is the heart of the living." Another monument
to her stands in north side of Notre Dame Cathedral Of Paris. In
1456, an inquisitorial court reinvestigated Joan's trial and
overturned the verdict, declaring that it was tainted by deceit
and procedural errors. Joan Of Arc (French: Jeanne d'Arc,
pronounced "Zhohn Dark") (c. 1412 - May 30, 1431),
patron saint of France, who claimed to be acting under divine
guidance and became a military leader who transcended gender roles
and gained recognition as a savior of France, honored as a
defender of the French nation for her role in the siege of Orleans
and her insistence on the coronation of Charles VII of France
during the Hundred Years' War (d. May 30, 1431) was born to a
propertied peasant family at Domremy in northeast France. In 1428,
she requested to be taken to Charles, later testifying that she
was guided by visions from the archangel Michael, Saint Margaret,
and Saint Catherine to help him save France from English
domination. Convinced of her devotion and purity, Charles sent
Joan, who was about seventeen years old, to the siege of Orleans
as part of a relief army. She arrived at the city in April 1429,
wielding her banner and bringing hope to the demoralized French
army. Nine days after her arrival, the English abandoned the
siege. Joan encouraged the French to aggressively pursue the
English during the Loire Campaign, which culminated in another
decisive victory at Patay, opening the way for the French army to
advance on Reims unopposed, where Charles was crowned as the King
Of France with Joan at his side. These victories boosted French
morale, paving the way for their final triumph in the Hundred
Years' War several decades later. After Charles's coronation, Joan
participated in the unsuccessful siege of Paris in September 1429
and the failed siege of La Charite in November. Her role in these
defeats reduced the court's faith in her. Joan has been revered as
a martyr, and viewed as an obedient daughter of the Roman Catholic
Church, an early feminist, and a symbol of freedom and
independence. After the French Revolution, she became a national
symbol of France. In 1920, Joan Of Arc was canonized by the Roman
Catholic Church and, two years later, was declared one of the
patron saints of France. She is portrayed in numerous cultural
works, including literature, music, paintings, sculptures, and
theater. Joan Of Arc's name was written in a variety of ways.
There is no standard spelling of her name before the sixteenth
century; her last name was usually written as "Darc"
without an apostrophe, but there are variants such as "Tarc",
"Dart" or "Day". Her father's name was written
as "Tart" at her trial. She was called "Jeanne d'Ay
de Domremy" in Charles VII's 1429 letter granting her a coat
of arms. Joan may never have heard herself called "Jeanne
d'Arc". The first written record of her being called by this
name is in 1455, 24 years after her death. She was not taught to
read and write in her childhood, and so dictated her letters. She
may have later learned to sign her name, as some of her letters
are signed, and she may even have learned to read. Joan referred
to herself in the letters as "Jeanne la Pucelle" (Joan
the Maiden) or as "la Pucelle" (the Maiden), emphasizing
her virginity, and she signed "Jehanne". In the
sixteenth century, she became known as the "Maid Of Orleans".

Spencer-Churchill, CI, RRC, DStJ, known as Lady Randolph
Churchill, American-born British socialite and beauty, wife of
Lord Randolph Churchill and mother of British Prime Minister Sir
Winston Churchill (d. June 29, 1921) is #born Jennie Jerome in the
Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn. She was raised in Brooklyn,
Paris, and New York City. A noted beauty (an admirer, Lord
d'Abernon, said that there was "more of the panther than of
the woman in her look"), she worked as a magazine editor in
early life. Family lore insists that Jennie had Iroquois ancestry,
through her maternal grandmother; however, there is no research or
evidence to corroborate this. She was married for the first time
on April 15, 1874, aged 20, at the British Embassy in Paris, to
Lord Randolph Churchill. The Churchills had two sons: Winston
(1874-1965), the future prime minister, was #Born less than eight
months after the marriage. According to his biographer William
Manchester, Winston was most likely conceived before the marriage,
rather than born prematurely. When asked about the circumstances
of his birth, Winston Churchill would reply, "Although
present on the occasion, I have no clear recollection of the
events leading up to it.". Randolph's sisters believed that
the biological father of the second son, John Strange "Jack"
Spencer-Churchill (1880-1947) was Evelyn Boscawen, 7th Viscount
Falmouth. Jack Churchill served in the South African Light Horse
alongside his war correspondent brother in the Second Boer War in
1899-1900, and was shot through the leg in February 1900, during
the Battle of the Tugela Heights, part of the campaign for the
relief of Ladysmith. He fought in World War I He reached the rank
of Major and was awarded the French decorations of the Croix de
guerre and the Legion d'honneur and the British Distinguished
Service Order in 1918. After the war, he became a businessman in
the City of London. During the Blitz, he lost his house and
thereafter lived in 10 Downing Street, where he used the bedrooms
on the top floor formerly used by Churchill and his wife, or the
No 10 Annex. He died on February 23, 1947, aged 67, of heart
disease and is buried near his parents and brother. When Lord
Randolph died in 1895, aged 45, Jennie was free to mix in the
highest London society circles, despite of her lack of money. She
married the much younger George Cornwallis-West in London on 28
July 1900. Around this time, she became well known for chartering
the hospital ship RFA Maine to care for those wounded in the
Second Boer War, for which she received the decoration of the
Royal Red Cross (RRC) in the South Africa Honours list published
on 26 June 1902.In 1908 she wrote her memoirs, The Reminiscences
of Lady Randolph Churchill. The Churchills were becoming a
dedicated literary family, and Jennie took to writing plays for
the West End. George doted on Jennie, amorously nicknaming her
"pussycat". However, they drifted apart. Her third
marriage, on 1 June 1918, was to Montagu Phippen Porch
(1877-1964), a member of the British Civil Service in Nigeria, who
was three years Winston's junior. In May 1921, while Montagu Porch
was away in Africa, Jennie slipped while coming down a friend's
staircase wearing new high-heeled shoes, breaking her ankle.
Gangrene set in, and her left leg was amputated above the knee on
June 10. She died at her home at 8 Westbourne Street in London,
following a haemorrhage of an artery in her thigh (resulting from
the amputation). She was 67 years old. She is buried in the
Churchill family plot at St Martin's Church, Bladon, Oxfordshire,
next to her first husband. According to legend, Jennie Churchill
was responsible for the invention of the Manhattan cocktail. She
allegedly commissioned a bartender for a special drink to
celebrate the election of Samuel J. Tilden to the New York
governorship in 1874. While the drink is believed to have been
invented by the Manhattan Club (an association of New York
Democrats) on that occasion, Jennie could not have been involved,
as she was in Europe at the time, about to give birth to her son
Winston later that month. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

Theater Of World War I: The Battle Of Gallipoli (The Gallipoli
Campaign, The Dardanelles Campaign, The Defense Of Gallipoli): --
The Battle Of Gallipoli concludes with an Ottoman Empire victory
when the last Allied forces are evacuated from the peninsula. The
Gallipoli Campaign, also known as the Dardanelles Campaign, the
Battle Of Gallipoli, or the Battle of Canakkale, took place on the
Gallipoli peninsula (Gelibolu in modern Turkey) in the Ottoman
Empire between February 17, 1915 and January 9, 1916. The
peninsula forms the northern bank of the Dardanelles, a strait
that provided a sea route to the Russian Empire, one of the Allied
powers during the war. Intending to secure it, Russia's allies,
Britain and France, launched a naval attack followed by an
amphibious landing on the peninsula, with the aim of capturing the
Ottoman capital of Constantinople (modern Istanbul). The naval
attack was repelled and after eight months' fighting, with many
casualties on both sides, the land campaign was abandoned and the
invasion force was withdrawn to Egypt. The campaign was the only
major Ottoman victory of the war. In Turkey, it is regarded as a
defining moment in the nation's history, a final surge in the
defence of the motherland as the Ottoman Empire crumbled. The
struggle formed the basis for the Turkish War Of Independence and
the declaration of the Republic of Turkey eight years later, with
Mustafa Kemal (Kemal Ataturk) as President, who rose to prominence
as a commander at Gallipoli. The campaign is often considered to
be the beginning of Australian and New Zealand national
consciousness; April 25, the anniversary of the landings, is known
as "Anzac Day", the most significant commemoration of
military casualties and veterans in the two countries, surpassing
Remembrance Day (Armistice Day). On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

September 2, 2005) is #born Robert Osbourne Denver in New

several careers, first as a mailman for the US Postal Service,
then as a high school teacher. He was exempt from military
service, as he had suffered a broken neck in 1956, when he was
twenty-one. He was attending college at Loyola-Marymount
University in Los Angeles when he first got into acting. His first
role was a bit part, a character named MacIntosh in the film, "A
Private's Affair" (1959). He was then picked up for the
character of a bearded beatnik named Maynard G. Krebs, as a wacky
foil against his college classmate and fellow actor, Dwayne
Hickman, in the television series "The Many Loves of Dobie
Gillis." This show went on for four seasons, and when it
ended, he was offered his best remembered role of Gilligan.
"Gilligan's Island" has been seen for many years on the
rerun circuit. After "Gilligan's Island" ended in 1967,
he tried several other shows, including the role of Dusty in
"Dusty's Trail" (1973) and several Broadway plays. He
would reprise his role of Gilligan in several sequels, usually
presented as two-hour made-for-television movie specials,
including "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" (1978), "The
Castaways on Gilligan's Island" (1979), and "The Harlem

January 9, 1950: #BOTD: #HBD! David
Johansen, American singer, songwriter, and actor best known as
lead singer of the seminal proto-punk band the New York Dolls,
also known for his work under the pseudonym Buster Poindexter and
for playing the Ghost of Christmas Past in Scrooged (1988) (d.
February 28, 2025) is #born David Roger Johansen in Staten Island,
New York to a librarian Irish American mother, Helen (Cullen), and
an insurance sales representative Norwegian American father,
Gunvold Johansen, who had previously sung opera. Johansen became
involved with the scene at Andy Warhol's Factory. He also worked
with Charles Ludlam at Ludlam's Ridiculous Theater Company, where
Johansen did sound and lights. Johansen began his music career in
the late 1960s as the lead singer of the Vagabond Missionaries, a
local Staten Island band and later in the early 1970s as the
singer/songwriter in the proto-punk band the New York Dolls. The
New York Dolls were part of the Mercer Arts Center's scene,
appearing on the bill at a New Year's Eve 1972 gig with Ruby and
the Rednecks. They released two albums, New York Dolls (1973) and
Too Much Too Soon (1974). The bulk of the material was written by
Johansen and guitarist Johnny Thunders. The Dolls had a strong
cult following and glowing reviews from critics such as Lester
Bangs, Robert Christgau and Nick Kent, but overall garnered a
divided critical reaction and did not initially find commercial
success. The New York Dolls appeared on the BBC TV's live music
programme The Old Grey Whistle Test, where presenter "Whispering
Bob" Harris notoriously derided the band on air as "mock
rock". In 1975, Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan left the
band. Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain along with Peter Jordan, Chris
Robison, and Tony Machine continued playing as the New York Dolls
until 1976 after which Johansen embarked on a solo career. His
first two solo albums, the David Johansen and In Style, featured
several enduring originals. His self-titled album peaked at number
91 in Australia in August 1978. Sylvain Sylvain frequently
performed with him and his band covered many Dolls songs in
concert. His live albums Live It Up and The David Johansen Group
Live document Johansen's reputation as an exceptional concert
performer. The studio releases Here Comes the Night (which
includes a signature number, "Heart of Gold") and Sweet
Revenge again showcased his strengths as a writer of new material
and featured a guest appearance by jazz saxophone player Big Jay
McNeely. A number of the songs on Here Comes the Night were
co-written with South African musician Blondie Chaplin. In 1982
Johansen was the opening act for the Who at several U.S. East
Coast concerts, including Shea Stadium in New York City and
Capital Centre near Washington, D.C.. In the late 1980s, Johansen
achieved moderate commercial success under the pseudonym Buster
Poindexter, accompanied by the Uptown Horns, performing jump
blues, traditional pop, swing, and novelty songs. He also appeared
as part of the house band on the television program Saturday Night
Live. As Poindexter, he scored his first hit song, "Hot Hot
Hot", which, in an interview on National Public Radio's Fresh
Air, he called "the bane of my life" due to its
pervasive popularity. "Hot Hot Hot" was initially
written and recorded by Montserratian Soca artist Arrow. As
Poindexter, Johansen often appeared with his band, the Banshees of
Blue. Early Poindexter releases combined an eclectic selection of
covers with Johansen's own compositions. Johansen went on to issue
Buster's Happy Hour, an album of songs thematically linked by
their subject matter: alcohol. It was followed by Buster
Poindexter's Spanish Rocket Ship, which focused on salsa and
merengue music. Johansen acted in several films during the 1980s
and 1990s, and in 2000, had a brief role on the HBO drama series
Oz. He appeared in the television series The Adventures of Pete &
Pete in the episode "On Golden Pete", in which he played
a park ranger. He appeared in the Muppet Television segment of an
episode of The Jim Henson Hour. He also appeared in The Equalizer
playing a violent criminal named Garnet in the 1987 episode
"Re-Entry". Among his more prominent roles are that of
the wisecracking Ghost of Christmas Past in Scrooged (1988), which
starred Bill Murray as well as the part of "Looney" in
the movie Let It Ride (1989), playing opposite Richard Dreyfuss.
He starred opposite Hulk Hogan and Sherman Hemsley in Mr. Nanny
(1993) and co-starred with John C. McGinley in the movie Car 54,
Where Are You? (1994), based on the television series. He can be
seen in the Jim White documentary film Searching for the Wrong
Eyed Jesus in which he sings a version of Geeshie Wiley's "Last
Kind Words" while in a motel room. He also had a supporting
role with Mick Jagger and Emilio Estevez in the movie Freejack
(1992). He played Halston (a hired hitman) in the anthology film
Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990), in the segment "The
Cat from Hell". He was the guest music artist on the Miami
Vice episode "The Dutch Oven" (1985), where he sang
"King of Babylon". Johansen most recently portrayed the
bartender in the Bill Murray Netflix special A Very Murray
Christmas. Johansen voiced the villain Ding Dong Daddy in the
original Teen Titans animated series in the season 5 episode 9
episode "Revved Up". Johansen's legs appeared in John
Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1971 film Up Your Legs Forever. He voiced
the Beartaur character in the 2021 Centaurworld animated Netflix
television series. Johansen then turned to blues with his group,
the Harry Smiths. The group was named as a tribute to Harry
Everett Smith, who compiled the Anthology of American Folk Music,
several songs of which were covered by the band. Johansen's second
album with the Harry Smiths is titled Shaker. In 2004, Johansen
reunited with Sylvain Sylvain and Arthur Kane of the New York
Dolls. Owing to the success of the tour, in 2006 the New York
Dolls released One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This,
their first album in nearly 30 years. It was critic Robert
Christgau's choice for album of the year. In 2009 the band
released Cause I Sez So and in 2011 Dancing Backward in High
Heels. Johansen hosted a weekly show, David Johansen's Mansion of
Fun, on Sirius Satellite Radio while continuing to write and
perform. Featuring music "from the jungles of Africa to the
Bayou of Louisiana and from Duke Ellington to Phil Spector to
Billy Joe Shaver, the show was all over the musical map", the
show is free-form and eclectic. As of January 2020, the show aired
on channel 710 (stream-only), The Loft. In October 2007, Johansen
participated in "The Staten Island Composers Project",
featuring work by three musicians who call the island home:
Johansen; Vernon Reid, founder of the '80s rock-metal pioneers
Living Colour, and Galt MacDermot, best known as the composer of
the musical Hair. The Council on the Arts and Humanities for
Staten Island commissioned the program and asked each artist to
write 20 minutes of music conveying something of his connection to
the island often referred to as New York City's forgotten borough.
Johansen's opus, a cinematic and unabashedly romantic Adagio
scored mostly for strings, is called "Mara Dreams the Moon
Gate of Uncommon Beauty". Inspired by "The Moon Gate of
Uncommon Beauty", a round portal between two rockscapes in
the Chinese Scholar's Garden at the Staten Island Botanical
Garden. In September 2009, he appeared on Anthony Bourdain: No
Reservations, the Travel Channel television program, in which he
toured Staten Island with the program's host. In addition to his
own albums, Johansen contributed songs to the soundtracks of the
films Times Square and The Aviator ("Flowers in the City"
and "Ain't Cha Glad" respectively) and guests on About
Them Shoes, a CD by veteran blues man Hubert Sumlin. Another
non-album track of his, "Johnsonius", appears on the
1984 compilation A Diamond Hidden in the Mouth of a Corpse and
"The Rope (The Let Go Song)", a track originally
recorded during the sessions for his eponymous first album and
published on the B-side of the single, "Funky But Chic",
a song that was performed by the original New York Dolls before
their break up. An artist noted for his musical unpredictability
and versatility, Johansen was a consistent blues enthusiast since
the earliest days of the Dolls, with covers of songs by Bo Diddley
and Sonny Boy Williamson among their earliest numbers. The 2006
Dolls CD Private World : The Complete Early Studio Demos 1972/3
featured the Dolls performing songs by Otis Redding, Gary U.S.
Bonds, Chuck Berry, The Shangri-Las, and Muddy Waters, in addition
to versions of songs from their two Mercury albums. Also featured
on the CD was a previously unreleased Dolls number, "Endless
Party". Johansen worked consistently with Sylvain Sylvain,
drummer Tony Machine - formerly an agent who worked for Leber &
Krebs, a member of the New York Dolls in 1975-1976 and a fixture
in many David Johansen groups and throughout the Buster Poindexter
period - and Brian Koonin, guitarist and banjo player with Buster
Poindexter and the Harry Smiths as well as keyboard player with
the New York Dolls for the first reunion engagement and the One
Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This CD and tour. In
September 2020, Johansen released a cover of "Sinking Ship"
by Gypsy. On July 7, 2020, Showtime Documentary Films announced
that filmmaker Martin Scorsese would direct a new feature film on
Johansen. The Showtime documentary, Personality Crisis: One Night
Only, was released on April 14, 2023. Scorsese was joined in the
making of the film by his frequent co-director David Tedeschi,
and, with Johansen, Scorsese was interviewed about the film by
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough. Johansen wed actress and long-time
girlfriend Cyrinda Foxe in 1977 but divorced within a year in
1978. Johansen was married to photographer Kate Simon from 1983 to
2011. Johansen wed artist Mara Hennessey in 2013. Johansen was
diagnosed with stage four cancer and a brain tumor in 2020,
leading to him retiring from performing as a live musician. He
fell and broke his back in two places in November 2024 and
required surgery. His step-daughter launched a fundraiser to help
with his treatment on February 10, 2025. David Johansen died from
cancer at his Staten Island home on February 28, 2025, at the age
of 75. His remains were cremated, and the ashes given to his widow
Mara Hennessey. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

British Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden resigns from office
following his failure to retake the Suez Canal from Egyptian
sovereignty. Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon, KG, MC, PC,
English soldier and politician, achieved rapid promotion as a
young Member of Parliament, and he was Foreign Secretary at the
age of 38, before resigning in protest at Neville Chamberlain's
appeasement policy towards Mussolini's Italy. He again held that
position for most of the Second World War, and a third time in the
early 1950s. Having been Winston Churchill's deputy for almost 15
years, he succeeded him as Prime Minister in April 1955. A skilled
diplomat, he nontheless blundered in 1956, when the United States
refused to support the Anglo-French military response to the Suez
Crisis, which signaled the end of British predominance in the
Middle East. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

January 9, 1960: Egyptian History: Modern
Egyptian History: Crimes Against Culture (German: Kulturshade,
"Shame Against Culture"): The Inundation Of Lower Nubia,
Southern Egypt And Northern Sudan: The Aswan Dam (The Aswan High
Dam): -- President of Egypt Gamal Abdel Nasser opens construction
on the Aswan Dam by detonating ten tons of dynamite to demolish
twenty tons of granite on the east bank of the Nile. Also known as
the Aswan High Dam, it is an embankment dam built across the Nile
in Aswan, Egypt, between 1960 and 1970. Its significance largely
eclipsed the previous Aswan Low Dam initially completed in 1902
downstream. Based on the success of the Low Dam, then at its
maximum utilization, construction of the High Dam became a key
objective of the government following the Egyptian Revolution of
1952; with its ability to control flooding better, provide
increased water storage for irrigation and generate
hydroelectricity the dam was seen as pivotal to Egypt's planned
industrialization. Like the earlier implementation, the High Dam
has had a significant effect on the economy and culture of Egypt.
Before the High Dam was built, even with the old dam in place, the
annual flooding of the Nile during late summer had continued to
pass largely unimpeded down the valley from its East African
drainage basin. These floods brought high water with natural
nutrients and minerals that annually enriched the fertile soil
along its floodplain and delta; this predictability had made the
Nile valley ideal for farming since ancient times. However, this
natural flooding varied, since high-water years could destroy the
whole crop, while low-water years could create widespread drought
and associated famine. Both these events had continued to occur
periodically. As Egypt's population grew and technology increased,
both a desire and the ability developed to completely control the
flooding, and thus both protect and support farmland and its
economically important cotton crop. With the greatly increased
reservoir storage provided by the High Aswan Dam, the floods could
be controlled and the water could be stored for later release over
multiple years. The Aswan Dam was designed by the Moscow-based
Hydroproject Institute. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

-- Zoom, stylized as ZOOM, a half-hour educational television
program created almost entirely by children, is first broadcast.
It aired on PBS originally from January 9, 1972, to February 10,
1978, with reruns being shown until September 12, 1980. It was
originated and produced by WGBH-TV in Boston. Inspired by
educational shows like Sesame Street and The Electric Company, but
designed to give the kids who watched it a voice without adults on
screen, it was, for the most part, unscripted. Far from seeking to
make stars of the child performers, their contracts prohibited
them from making any television appearances or doing commercials
for three years after they left the show. The show was revived in
